Sean Kampondeni: The Democratic Progressive Party is officially - TopicsExpress

Sean Kampondeni: The Democratic Progressive Party is officially resisting the recounting of votes after the Malawi Electoral Commission ordered a recount of votes following the discovery of substantial discrepancies between the number of votes reported and the number of voters registered. It is reported that the DPP has even obtained a court injunction to obstruct the recount. In the court of public opinion, the only party that agrees with the DPP refusal to recount the votes is the DPP. In a strange turn of events, the party that was increasingly believed to be winning the election by popular vote is now increasingly isolating itself into a corner of suspicion. And by all indications , the DPPs presidential candidate has dispatched his officials and pundits to fight against a vote recount until MEC is forced to declare him the winner of this election using vote figures that MEC has already proved to be fraudulent. On the one hand, it is understandable that he would not want a recount that may lead to the loss of an election he was falsely believed to be winning, just as it is understandable that any DPP insiders who may have broken electoral laws to distort the numbers would be exposed to prosecution. But it is hard to understand how this rejection of a recount helps the DPPs public image or the credibility of its flag bearer. They have clearly determined that in their camp, they dont care what the country thinks of their untenable position on the recount, so long as they are in charge of it all. In fact, by rejecting a recount, they have become a self-fulfilling prophecy, for they are showing that they have no interest in finding out what the voters really said about them in the election. Why do you want to be president of a citizenry whose will and choice expressed in a vote you do not want to know? Could the DPP be feeling squeezed into a corner where their true colours are coming out? Could this be the last dice of survival cast to get into power at the expense of upholding their public image as a party that was once known for being Democratic and Progressive? If DPP are scoring any goals with this injunction, they are mostly own goals, which is no recipe for winning. Lets pray they come to their senses like they have done so far in this election. And lets pray the honorable professor who leads them will let his honor shine through. His MCP rival has said he has nothing to hide. I am sure Mutharika will use this crisis to prove that he is no different. Shalom
