Second day in India, 0830 local time. Since we are 12.5 hours - TopicsExpress

Second day in India, 0830 local time. Since we are 12.5 hours ahead of Portland, it must be 2000 (8 pm) at home. Landing in New Delhi yesterday, the first thing we noticed, look long before we actually touched down was the smell. I knew every place has its own odor, but this is the first time it hit me so strongly. It seems to be a mixture of thousands of odors at once, the smokey petrol smell of millions of two cycle engine, sewer smells, and food. Food is being prepared on the streets everywhere. The streets are teeming with people, bicycles and various forms of motorized transportation. The lane lines are merely suggestions, to be mostly ignored. Our driver from the airport seemed to mostly straddle the lines. Honking seems to be the national pastime. The early morning air was so thick, airplanes landing looked like ghosts that appeared and disappeared as they approached. The streets are truly byzantine. I would like to walk around, but I know I would get quickly lost. We joined up with Guy and Lavinia Marx around noon. Had a wonderful meal of chicken makani, birianni, and some cray ggod potatoes at a nearby hotel. Then we walked the streets in the area for a while searching for a battery for Lavinias camera. Today, we will visit the arts and crafts museum before meeting up with the tour group tonight. I will post some pics later. #awedinindia
