Seidels Paris Review poem, barring some unforgivable lines, sought to broach issues of convenience, of watching lives from afar, of impossible bodies, grotesque realities and conspiracies. My problem is that his poem should have been in conversation with a voice that isnt afforded that cold distance; thats less his fault. The oversight is a product of a poetry world in which certain poets are knighted, or awarded, and others disregarded. One might call the poetry world a microcosm of the larger world. In this, the poet raises a point: You can change. Or, from a more immediate perspective: You must change. Or, the truth: This will change. It has to.
