(Semi-random, semi-nostalgic wonder-rambling about advances in internet technologies) Lets start doing the styling in cascading stylesheets! they said. Itll be cleaner and lighter and faster than big, huge HTML files bloated by styling markup in every page! they said. Just a few lines of CSS can replace hundreds of lines of mark-up in each HTML document! they said. Ten, twelve years later and Ive got a stylesheet for a site that runs over 2500 lines. Thats the STYLESHEET kids. Over 2500 lines of - well, if I say code real programmers will complain, and rightly so. But, to a normal person, its still 2500 lines of computer code. And thats not one line of content - the words and images you see on the page - thats just the make-pretty code. And, in case youre one of my many friends who arent in this line and have no reason to know a CSS from a BDSM, I should add that it -does- reduce the file size and clean things up quite a bit. If we had to build something like the site Im working on in old-fashioned HTML, with all the presentation mark-up mixed in with the content mark-up...? Well, we just wouldnt. We couldnt do it, back then. CSS and better, more advanced HTML has made it possible. Thats why all pages dont look like they did in the 90s any more. If you cant remember what web pages looked like in the 90s look at reddit/ (Of course, to be fair, even that wouldnt be possible without modern code.)
