Senior Hurriyat (G) leaders placed under house arrest to foil protests Srinagar, July 25: Senior leaders of Hurriyat Conference (G) were placed under house arrest on Friday to prevent them from leading anti-Israel protest rallies, a party spokesman said. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of his faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), had urged people to observe Jumat-ul Vida (the last Friday of Ramadhan) as ‘Youm-i-Quds’ – an annual event initiated by Iran in 1979 to express solidarity with Palestinians and oppose Zionism and Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem. He had called for hour-long peaceful protests after Friday congregational prayers today, July 25, to protest the Israel’s use of brute force against Palestinians. “Other than Geelani Sahab, who is already under house arrest, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Altaf Shah and Ayaz Akbar were also barred from moving out of their respective homes,” the spokesman said.
