September 21 : This Day in Music History 1934 : On this day in 1934, Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Norman Cohen (Leonard Cohen) was born in Montreal, Quebec. Suzanne is one of his most famous songs. 1963 : Bobby Vintons Blue Velvet hits #1. 1972 : Liam Gallagher (co-lead vocalist for Oasis) is born William John Paul Gallagher in Burnage, Manchester, England. 1987 : John Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report) dies. 2011 : R.E.M. announce that theyre calling it quits after more than 30 years. In a post on their website, the band members write, To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.
