Sequestration Stories #3: So how indebted was the Confederate South to Northern financial interests at the outset of the war? Between 1861-63 the District Court of SC sequestered more 5,000 debts and sequestrated more than 4,000 businesses co-owned by a northerner in the Low Country alone. In the southern district of Georgia the court sequestered more 7,000 debts (same time period), in NC nearly 5,000 debts, and in Texas some 7,000 debts in the eastern district alone. Is this level of indebtedness a possible ulterior motive for secession?
