Serving The Flesh Daily Reading Speaking to the people, Jesus said, “Take care! Protect yourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have or how great the possessions you own.” Jesus then gave a story of a man that had come into riches and became full of himself only seeking to find a way to satisfy his fleshly desires. All he could think of is what he could do for himself with his new riches. However, Jesus emphasized that we should not be like this man, but be rich towards God. In this same manner Satan lures us to fall for the things of the world. He is only trying to lure you with the things that will cause you to “serve the flesh.” The world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world (1 John 2:16). Satan offered Jesus all the riches of the world to serve him, only trying to cause Jesus to serve His flesh (Matthew 4:8-10). Satan convinced Eve that what he was offering her was greater than what God had already given to her and her husband; God was only holding out them and not telling them the whole story. The Scripture say, “The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree God told them not partake of was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. She wanted something to “serve the flesh.” So she and her husband disobeyed God. Passage Genesis 3:4-6 (NASB) The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Passage Luke 15:13-21 (Message Bible) Someone out of the crowd said, “Teacher, order my brother to give me a fair share of the family inheritance.” He replied, “Mister, what makes you think it’s any of my business to be a judge or mediator for you?” Speaking to the people, he went on, “Take care! Protectyourself against the least bit of greed. Life is not defined by what you have, even when you have a lot.” Then he told them this story: “The farm of a certain rich man produced a terrific crop. He talked to himself: ‘What can I do? My barn isn’t big enough for this harvest.’ Then he said, ‘Here’s what I’ll do: I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll gather in all my grain and goods, and I’ll say to myself, Self, you’ve done well! You’ve got it made and can now retire. Take it easy and have the time of your life!’ “Just then God showed up and said, Fool! Tonight you die. And your barnful of goods—who gets it?’ “That’s what happens when you fill your barn with Self and not with God.”
