Several days ago, I shared a moment with Charles Koff that hadnt left my mind since it happened over 20 years ago. As a kid, I was creative and awkward and my father never understood me. Before he died, he lost everything and I remember sitting in a car with him a week before his death as I gave him a ride to where he was staying. As I pulled up, I put in a tape that was new to me, but apparently old to him. The music was Miles Davis Kind of Blue. We sat in silence and listened to the whole album and finally we understood each other without saying a word. He entered the hospital the next week from health complications, and I also entered the hospital from tonsillitis and couldnt talk. He called me in the hospital and said I know you cant talk, but I just wanted to say I love you, and I finally understand you......and always follow your dreams. I tried to say I love yoy, but my voice didnt work. When he hung the phone up, he died. The impact of hearing what I always wanted from him is immeasurable. Love yourself, and love your kids no matter how weird they are. Theyre a reflection of everything inside of you. Goodnight; )
