Severe Flood Closed Five Libraries in ex-Yugoslavia Many cities - TopicsExpress

Severe Flood Closed Five Libraries in ex-Yugoslavia Many cities in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia have suffered major damage in heavy floods these days. When it comes to libraries, book funds and equipment were destroyed in Doboj, Čelinac and Šamac (Republic of Srpska, BIH), Maglaj (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, BIH) and Obrenovac (Serbia). A certain number of libraries have suffered some less damage from flooding. Throwing out water from the basement, in the library in Bijeljina they caught a fish, but the situation is not at all happy in libraries and cities in Bosnia where floods and landslides have set in motion a large number of land mines left over from the 1992-1995 war. Carried downstream, the mines threaten to get into the countries placed along the course of the Sava and the Danube towards the Black Sea. The Mine Action Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina warned that the floods had moved land mines and taken away signs marking the dangerous areas. After the withdrawal of water in one of the cities, a fridge full of bombs appeared in the yard of a family house. Librarians Help Their Local Communities Librarians help in flood protection together with other citizens and donate a portion of their salary to the humanitarian aid fund. Many libraries in Serbia have launched a variety of programs and activities to help the victims. These days in Lazarevac, much more children than usual visit the local library and gather there, because the schools in this town do not work. Every day, the public library in Valjevo organizes a kind of bibliotherapy programs intended for children from the kindergarten, that consist in reading stories in the childrens library. The library in Vranje has joined the campaign for collecting humanitarian aid for flood affected areas. Libraries in Pančevo (in collaboration with BUDI, International Biennale of Artistic Childrens Expression), Gornji Milanovac, Stara Pazova ... collect toys, books and educational material for corners intended for children in collective centers. In agreement with the Association of Librarians of the Republic of Srpska, Libraries in Stara Pazova and Pančevo initiated the creation of a temporary collecting center for help in books and equipment for libraries in the Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to facilitate the delivery of this kind of support collected by librarians from Serbia, for their colleagues in the affected libraries. Campaign to help libraries (and librarians) in the Republic of Srpska is in progress, and it is uncertain when we will be able to start eliminating the consequences of the flood in the library in Obrenovac.
