Shared Planet, the series that looks at what happens when growing human population collides with the rest of the planets inhabitants, is back. On Tuesday on BBC Radio 4, in the first programme of the new series, Monty Don explores the difficulties in keeping conservation secrets and the effects of secrecy on rare orchids and rhinos. For the ladys slipper orchid in England, reduced to a single plant, secrecy was considered the only solution for many years, but when collectors discovered its site, conservation strategy changed.
