Shared, with commentary- “One day he looks at me and says, ‘Dad, I want to be light-skinned so I could be Spider-Man. Spider-Man has light skin.’ That was sort of a shock.” I just cannot fathom people with so little empathy that they dont understand why its important to have superheroes that are minorities and women. You cannot simultaneously say skin color (or gender) is irrelevant AND that white characters should be kept white. If it doesnt matter, let others have representation. If it does matter, you better have an actual argument for why whiteness (or maleness) is imperative to the character, because tradition is a non-starter. And if revamping an existing character is a safer move for comic book or movie companies than putting out brand new characters, Ill take whats available. “Yeah, the way we went about casting Fantastic Four was, ‘Who is the best actor for the part?’” writer/producer Simon Kinberg told me. “We didn’t go into it saying we wanted to cast a particular race for any part. Its amazing how often this is used to justify casting all white people (*coughNoahcough*) and nice to see it being applied to actual colorblind casting. In world where blended families are the norm rather than the exception, having mixed race siblings should not raise eyebrows. If you can suspend your disbelief for superpowers but not black and white siblings, your imagination is broke. Mab Ryan, who is an excellent human bean.
