Sheesh! I thought replacing the battery on a game cart would be - TopicsExpress

Sheesh! I thought replacing the battery on a game cart would be easy! Well it wouldve been, if I had a replacement cradle and a soldering iron. But I didnt, so I had to do it some other way. First off, I expected the battery to just pop out of its cradle, pop a new one in and Bobs your uncle. No such luck. The battery is soldered and/or glued to its cradle! So after some searching on Google I found an alternative method: cutting it out. Sure. No problem. Open heart surgery on a rare game that still sells for an easy 60 euros. No pressure! So I got an exacto knife and proceeded to cut (read, saw) the battery off of its cradle. This was no easy task and you never think youre going anywhere until you hear this *TWANG* and your knifes on the other end of the cradle. Minor heart attack later, I found out that the bottom end of the battery was glued to the cradle as well. Cack. More cutting later and I finally got it out of there. Victory! Thank god I have plenty of replacement batteries for these things (CR 2032 for those who wanna know). OK so now what? If that thing was glued to its cradle, how am I gonna get the new one to sit in place? Duct Tape is how. All hail Duct Tape. I stuck a piece under the bottom lip of the cradle, put the new battery in place and wrapped the tape around the top. After that, I used another piece of tape to put over the cradle and around the cartridge, so that its held snugly against the cartridge. Then I put the cart back in its casing. And now for the moment of truth. I turned on my SNES and the game booted up. Went to the first save point I could find, saved and turned off the system. I took out the cart and shook it around a bit, to make sure the battery wasnt shifting. Put it back in, booted it up again and there it was: My save game intact! Victory! Next time Ill contemplate just buying a soldering iron and replacing the part in its entirety. What an ordeal.
