Short Story continued #4- there it was the end of the shadows and the branches and the smooth tumbled rocks, the path the old wives chattered about on late nights around the community fire.. it was a narrow path look like it had not been even looked upon in years. But it was like the path to redemption for me...my hair stood on the nap of my neck...a shadow caught the corner of my eye. The panting gone. My heart caught in the ace of my dry throat as I could not stop my head from looking to see what had cast such a large shadow and made such a gust of wind that hit me like a strong stormy breeze... I kept running for the fear to stop entailed in may have to fight and after 7 miles of running with all my might i fear i had not the might to fight or start running for my life again. I felt if i stopped or even slowed my body would collapses and fail me in survival. the only way to make it is to not even slow my machined pace. But there on the steep wall of the base of the mountain i saw grey wings, but only a blur of what creature had passed me. All I could tell was that the wings were twice the size of my own body. I started strait in my path and prayed to for more strength and speed. I prayed please let the beast not be hungry and not be after blood. a sinking feeling in my heart made me believe different. this blur of a beast I have never seen before was large enough to swallow me whole. In my fear i found strength. I could feel the sweat pour from my body and the dried blood from my mystery night began to moisten. The moist top soil I used to cover my strong honey due sent now became muddy streaks in down my body i could see it blend with the crimson streaks of the sweat wet blood. I wish I were in the river of yesterdays morning washing my hair with the old wives purple flower lye. clean and fresh ready to work for the local pub. I already missed my milk maid duties, and dishes to clean. I felt a tear and a lump swell, but I swallowed it down, feeling the dryness of my throat as it all most stuck together.. Back to the running. and out of my head. the path was up hill steady incline. I planted my toes and lifted my knees, breathing in my nose and out of my mouth, steady breathe fast her feet. push! push! push!. 2 more mile to go. the gust of story breeze hit me again. i was almost thankful. but the fear of what it could be was stalking me. this time the shadow was directly over me. I did not want to look up. I want to make it to the cave. I will make the cave. The anger of ambition set in me like a fire. I felt the numbness of my body and the speed of my fear. I ran even faster. I looked ahead to my destination and growled out another ounce of strength to push myself faster. I could no longer see anything around me, I only saw the path and a slight blur in my vision. I was at the brink of my bodies power. With no water or food to fuel me for the last 12 hours, I was sure to crash.
