"Showing Off" - A NewSpring Blog Post I remember taking a dance class when I had all the moves down and thought I was all that. But no one said anything about my talent. I was so mad! I wanted everyone to notice me. When our rehearsal began, I pushed people out of my way and danced in front of everyone. I looked awful. I remember catching myself in the mirror and feeling ashamed at how foolish I was. The beauty of the dance had been covered by my selfish attempt for the glory. Simon was a well-known sorcerer in his day, performing tricks and showing off with his magic. Then Philip, Peter and John came along. They were healing people with a word and bringing the Holy Spirit into people with a touch. Simon was amazed by this power, but his immediate thought was of himself. Simon wanted his own glory. He offered to pay for the ability to do what he’d seen done. Peter responded, “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.” Simon missed the point. We are only a part of the beautiful dance of life God created. When we seek our own glory we rob God of His glory. And when we are attempting to use God to gain recognition, we miss the chance to be used by God. Reflect: Which of your actions are an attempt to get yourself attention? What do you do to genuinely give God recognition? How might your need to be noticed keeping you from noticing God’s love for you? How can you help bring God glory today?
