Single term: Group issues 14-day ultimatum to N’Assembly June 19, 2013 by Friday Olokor, Abuja A non-governmental organisation, the Credible Nigeria, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the National Assembly to pass the proposed six-year single term for the President and governors. The National President, The CN, Chief Ibyekaribo LongJohn, who addressd journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, said the call had become imperative because of the tension re-election moves had caused in the polity. According to him, the six-year single term will enable the elected officials to abide by the oath of their office. LongJohn said, “The best thing to happen to Nigeria is the adoption of the proposed single term of six years. We are giving the National Assembly a 14-day ultimatum to make sure that it is reflected in our constitution. “You can bear with me that the elected officials, especially the president and the governors, most often abandon their responsibilities just to pursue their re-election. “It is unfortunate that some of them spend the first one year to sit down and plan how to implement their campaign promises and the last two years to plan for their re-election. They only use their second year in office of four year term and in some cases some part of their third year in office to concentrate while the last one and half years would be used to plan for re-election.” The group added that the second term bid would not only heat up the polity but also make the elected officials, who would want to be re-elected use all within their means to retain their positions. LongJohn also said the six-year single term would reduce political instability in the country.
