Smart thinking, quick action and community involvement resulted in this mass of fishing net, cargo net, heavy monofilament fishing line, garbage bags, plastic strapping material, and hawser line to be removed from the water. Yesterday afternoon we were alerted by a Tavernier citizen that they had seen a group of dolphin swimming in a close area and tail slapping. Upon further investigation they noticed the dolphins were swimming around this mass of marine debris. They towed the mass in and secured it to a dock. This morning FWC Officer LaRosa towed it to Tavernier Creek Marina where the owner and staff pulled the net out of the water (at no charge) so sanctuary staff can dispose of it properly.
