Snow Child The Snow Child runs, but she cant keep up. Her white feet fall into the earths frozen skin. Shes all alone. Her brothers melted days ago, but shed fallen asleep in the shade. A blank horizon line stretches out before her. The cornfield furrows are frozen mud, spanning silently outward in angled rows. Cold dusty corn stalks, lightly salted with frost, lean at angles from the ground like broken spears. A leafless tree in the distance cries for help. The sky above is grey and indifferent, busy doing other, more important things with its time. Why wont you talk to me, Sky! yelled the Snow Child. You made me, I came from you! But the sky stayed grey and didnt answer. Curse you Shade, You tricked me! You stuck me here, and now Im lost! And the Snow Child shook her flaky white fists violently above her head, showering the ground around her feet with a fine powdery mist. An icicle tear slowly trickled down her face, clinging to the end of her frozen nose. I want to fly again! cried the Snow Child, and her face broke into a distant smile as she remembered. I want to dance on the wind and sleep on the breeze...I want to fall through crisp Christmas Eve air into a childs open hand. Thats all I want. And the Snow Childs head hung low and she collapsed to her knees. At that moment, a sliver of golden light dipped down through the clouds. Gently, like a painters brush, it fell upon the Snow Child, and when it had faded, she was gone. - Jeremy Coleman Gowanus Salon #1 11/9/2013
