So I drive all the way to Canberra to renew my British passport at the embassy only to be told by the security guard on the gate that the man who does the passports is not here until Monday !! I mean, has Britain closed down? Is there only ONE man in a building the size of the bloody vatican that can deal with passport applications ? I was so pissed off I stalked away in disgust only to be called back by the guard who was trying to be helpful and handed me a piece of paper entitled handy hints for passport applicants. Apparently British passports are no longer issued through their embassies !!! They can ONLY be applied for and issued FROM LONDON !!!! Security issues aside (is the international post THAT secure for a passport, how does one KNOW whether its been posted, how do THEY know whether its been received etc) it seems a very dumb way of dealing with this matter - face to face is SURELY a safer way of issuing passports !! Anyway, I now have to get all the necessary documentation together, send it all to London, hope it arrives, pay an exorbitant fee of almost monstrous governmental-robbery proportions, and await said document eventually getting back to me. I am advised to be aware that this process could take up to six weeks !!! Therell always be an England ?? Sounds suspiciously like it sinking under the weight of its own organisational inertia - I mean, what DO those 120 diplomats at the British High Commission in Canberra actually DO ? Surely they cant ALL be spying !! The guy who does the passports isnt, hes off on holiday until Monday. Its a funny old world - on to Melbourne and dont spare the horses !!! :-)
