So I was making a trip to the ATM a few moments ago, and I stumbled upon a situation that really pissed me off, and I think theres something to be said about it. Im a few blocks away from the UC when I see this male Boxer, probably only a few years old, who was just sitting on the lawn in front of these two houses. The first few things I noticed about him were that he wasnt wearing any identification tags, he wasnt wearing a yard leash, and that he was skinny enough that his ribs were visible. I called him over and looked him over, and it was obvious he wasnt feral because he immediately attempted to play fetch with a pine cone hed found. There were so many things wrong with this, but I decided to finish my trip to the bank and come back to see if his owners got him, since he seemed pretty calm I figured he wouldnt go anywhere. 15 minutes later Im walking back to my house, and hes still sitting there on the lawn. Of course Im pretty ticked off at this point that theres just this adorable, well-behaved dog sitting unleashed and unattended to next to a busy street where someone could steal/hurt him, so I go up to one of the houses and knocked on the door. After a minute or so, a couple of unintelligent looking shirtless guys answer the door and the Boxer darts inside right away. They thanked me and introduced themselves as if they had no idea they were doing something completely illegal AND irresponsible as I fought the urge to give them an earful. But at least their dog was inside and not running loose on a college campus. Anyways, this all goes to show that if you decide to get a dog or a cat, or any other animal for that matter, it is a huge responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Leaving a poor unrestrained, underfed animal in your front yard by itself without any tags in the summer heat is probably one of the worst examples of pet ownership Ive ever seen. And if you dont know how to take even the most basic care of an animal, you should definitely not have one.
