So India finished 5th on the medals tally in 2014 Commonwealth Games with 64 medals, including 15 gold medals! Apart from this being a second rate sporting event, I have failed to understand the raison detre for this particular semi-global event. 71 countries (despite the fact that there are only 53 Commonwealth countries) participated in a 2 week long competition which basically glorifies the British empire and its tainted history of colonization. No wonder it was originally called The British Empire Games. And why are some of the former colonies, including India, so enthusiastic about commemorating a chapter of their history which is nothing but shrouded in darkness?
