So, before I go to bed, Im going to tell you what I thought of my evening at the GRID match I attended tonight in Berkeley, CA. I went because my buddy Paul Southern (co-owner of the San Francisco Fire) invited me. (Thanks, Paul!) Ive loved Paul and his wife Megan Kling Southern for years. So, I decided to drive up with my buddy Angela Galindo. We got delayed in horrible San Jose traffic and unfortunately arrived late to the match, but we were instantly floored by the intensity in the building. Like serious redhot energy. Like these people are nuts energy. Like a contagious methhead frenzy, except everyone was healthy and had their teeth. None of this had come across in any GRID match I watched online. But in person it was palpable—an athletic love affair between hundreds and hundreds of people—athletes and spectators together. Ive been to a lot of competitive exercise events in the past six years, but this one felt a little different. Maybe a splash of Games 2009, but a league of its own, with new equipment and polish and maturity. And the athletes all seemed so happy. SO happy. You wanted to hug them all. I dont have a crystal ball and I dont know the future of GRID or anything in this crazy old world, but what I saw tonight was far more exciting than what I expected to see. Far more exciting than what I had seen online. And the joy I witnessed on the athletes faces brought me back a bit in time, while it also made me hope for their future. Good luck, my friends. I hope theres a way to make everybodys dreams come true.
