So for the past 15 years or so I have held positions in Human resources for companies that provide supported living services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the last job having a focus in extreme and violent behaviors and dual diagnosis (mental illness on top of having an IQ of 70 or below). It takes a very special person to do this type of work because the pay is crappy, and not many people have the stomach to change diapers, assist with basic daily living skills like toileting, bathing, brushing teeth and feeding, never mind having to deal with an individual that wants to stab you, spit at you, bite you, kick you or smear feces on you. But, I wouldnt trade any of my experiences for the world. Having had these individuals in a T25 class (thats right... Get off your arse!), listening to their problems and joys, having them cuss me out one minute then tell me how much they love me the next. I miss working with these truly amazing individuals because they have taught me so much about things like forgiveness, compassion, unconditional love, determination, and patience. Some are my friends on facebook even! I consider them to be part of my family as I know I am part of theirs. I have enjoyed helping them reach their goals of greater independence and watching them grow as individuals as I have grown. So the next time you see a person that has a disability... Think of this post because it is filled with love for all of Gods creations and gifts. ❤️
