So for the young rooks and newbies joining I though I would give a little insight about the different player positions.Any time you guys see a person say something like I play the one, or we could use him at a 4 or 5 what theyre talking about is positions. *The 1 and 2 comprise the back court since the guards are supposed to play out of or near by the perimeter. The 3,4 and 5 are supposed to play inside the arc and near the rim, hence they are called the front court. 1=Point Guard (Chris Paul, Derrick Rose) The point guard is supposed to be the floor general. He directs his teammates and tries to set them up for easy baskets. The PG is most often the shortest but quickest player. A good point guard is usually the best ball handler on the team and can secure the ball very well. He also is supposed to have exceptional passing ability and court vision (know where all his opponents and teammates are at all times) and should have a reliable shot. They should be able to “read” the defense and exploit it. 2=Shooting Guard (Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan) The shooting guard is supposed to be the marksman of the team. He is usually the best and most consistent shooter on the team. A 2 is usually lengthy and athletic. The 2 also occasionally handles the ball well to help create his own shots and plays the role of the point guard at times. He also needs to be adept at moving without the ball to get himself free and try to wear down his defender. 3=Small Forward (Scottie Pippen, Lamar Odom) The small forward is supposed to be the most versatile, His job is to score, rebound, pass, and defend. Small forwards are typically taller and stronger than the 2, but smaller than the 4. Many times,Sometimes they can slide down to a 2 or jump up to a 4. On some teams that like to run a lot and play a small lineup, the small forward may even play center.A swingman refers to a small forward that can handle the 2 or 3 exceptionally well. Key Attributes: quick, recognized offensive threat, great defender, can pass reasonably well and can rebound consistently. 4=Power Forward (Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldridge ) The power forward is the guy scrapping and smashing helping the center defend the interior. These are guys typically there for rebounding, defending and put-backs, PFs are typically tall as SFs but shorter than Cs. They lean more towards the offensive side, but help on defense as well.*A point forward is a forward who is very well rounded and can bring up the ball and setup the offense. 5=Center (Shaqulle ONeal/Hakeem Olajuwon) The center is typically the tallest and biggest player. He is supposed to be the defensive anchor. He patrols the painted area; the last line of defense to the basket. The center usually takes high percentage shots on offense, as his shots are typically very close to the basket. A good center should be physically strong (as he likely will bear most of the punishment below the rim), be agile, have a reliable free throw percentage, be a strong and aggressive rebounder, be able to intimidate opposing players, have soft hands and a soft touch around the basket physically strong, good upper and lower body strength and be able to recognize the open player when being double-teamed and be able to effectively pass to an open teammate as soon as possible.
