So here is a problem from Sara Beths 4th grade math homework: Billy has 40 cars on his lot. He has 9 times more white cars than yellow cars. How many white cars does he have? OK so she (my super smart gifted child) just could not get it. And I let her struggle. I can remember teaching problems JUST like this a few years ago in 8th grade math. The only way I know to solve it is to say 9c + c = 40 so 10c = 40 and c = 4. So then you plug in 4 for c and multiply it by 9 to get the white cars and 4 stands alone as the number of yellow cars. Is it just me or is this just WAY to advanced for 4th graders?? They are not nearly mature enough for these concepts. I dont care how smart they are!! #commoncorestruggle #baffled #daddydontgetit
