So here’s a little something, a bit of a rant if you will. Very often I see people looking for some type of service work to be done. Carpentry, electrical, automotive etc… They ask for two things quality work at a cheap price. Now although those are noble quests I don’t think that some people know what it takes for a craftsperson to learn to do quality work. Just for starters it takes time and money. Let’s talk about time first. To become a top quality electrician I started by serving a 5 year apprenticeship that included more than 1,200 hours of studies in an accredited apprentice training school along with 10,000 hours of on the job training. Along with that over my 35+ years of experience I have spent at a minimum of another 2,500 hours of my time at continuing education courses. Oh, and when I say 35+ years of experience please realize what that means. I have seen more types of electrical issues than you could imagine, which give me the ability to trouble-shoot almost any type of issues that might arise. I also know that the folks who do carpentry, HVAC, automotive and other trades have similar experiences on their career road. Those of us who delve into the bowels of this world aren’t just guys/girls who have a hammer slung around their waist and drive pick-em-up trucks. We, not unlike other professionals, have chosen to dedicate our lives to becoming quality craftsmen/women in our chosen field. So with this in mind please realize that when people want these services “cheap” it is taken as a slap in the face by many of us in these fields and is rarely met with a positive enthusiastic reply. While I would agree it’s a good idea for prospective clients to compare prices, it is equally important to compare abilities. In many if not most cases you do get what you pay for. When you talk to a perspective craftsperson be clear with them regarding your budget and your scope of work. Often they can work with you to provide you a quality installation that meets your budget. As with any other part of life communication is the most important factor in a successful relationship between parties. Thank you. Paul
