So in my Contemporary and Social Issues in Sports class we were asked for our forum post this week to be about if college athletes should be paid below is my response----- Should they be paid? Paid no. Compensated yes. This is where most people get lost or start throwing there own media bias ideas at me and ranting and raving. No, I dont think the players should get paid. They are getting paid and in some cases upwards of $60,000.00 a year to play at a school for free. They do how ever need to be compensated better. They should not have restricted meal times or a certain allowance. Players train and practice most of the time when they are not in class they have more of a need for extra food and drinks than the average student does. Players should not lose out on there scholarships if they have a season or career ending injury that prevents them from playing again. Schools should also pay for long lasting injuries. Most people would say well pay them to eat, this is where I usually state my major draw back to paying college players. If you start paying college players they will want more money, hold out if they dont get more, lose what college sports is all about. College kids should never have leverage they are still learning and still need some level of discipline. However, I do think that he money the players help the school to get should stay within the athletic department or at least go to the team. A few years ago AJ Green was suspended 6 games for signing a jersey and selling it to get money for food, while Univ of Nebraska had there whole team sign there game worn jerseys and sell them at auction to build a new performing arts center. Somehow the latter was an acceptable occurrence while as the first one was grounds for suspension. This to me is a weird double standard. If they players cant use the money they bring in the school should not be able to use them for anything other than the athletic department. As most of you will see and Im sure the teacher will note in my grade I did not have any references. I chose not to use them, no one can say better how I feel or why then my self. Most people dont share my views so there was not allot of places for me to reference. Speaking out against the NCAA and there double standard is so taboo now and days people are afraid to bring it to the medias attention. Grambling state wins lots of games and brings in over $2 million, yet they wouldnt even upgrade the facilities so players wouldnt be around black mold or other types of health hazards. But AJ Green gets suspended for selling his jersey for food..ya that makes sense.
