So it is AL Down Syndrome Day & all month is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, so as a mother and an advocate, I will be posting facts about DS all month. I, myself, did not have a clue until we received Gabriels diagnosis, and Im still learning. So my assumption is that the majority of you were like I was, therefore I dont mind sharing what weve learned along this journey. So here is todays lesson: What is DS? We all have 23 pairs of chromosomes that defines what color hair well have, our facial features, etc, so we typically end up with 46 total chromosomes. With DS there is a 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome, so they end up with 47 total chromosomes. That extra chromosome can create some differences in what we perceive as typical traits.
