So, its Friday afternoon, around 3:40pm and I go to Lidl in Sandiacre for a few provisions. Not overly busy but come across a family of four also doing some shopping, having obviously collected their two kids from school. Mum, a petite, dark haired lady with a cute little blonde son (primary school age) together with tall, pretty teenage daughter with lovely long hair and then there was Dad. Minding my own business, looking at produce and become aware of Dad and teenage daughter stifling their laughter at my appearance (I am currently sporting facial bandages following major surgery). At first I ignored this but when it carried on further on into my shopping expedition I became rather uncomfortable and wondered why they were displaying such behaviour. However, following my cancer diagnosis, several surgeries, radiotherapy treatments and reconstruction surgeries to my face, I would actually like to thank these people for making me realise what a brilliant job I have done to raise a son to teenage years who is polite, well mannered and caring and would under no circumstances publicly ridicule anyone who has any disfigurement, let along a facial one. I find it quite sad that such a beautiful young girl is being raised to believe that it is acceptable to openly mock someone who has been afflicted by such a terrible disease but more importantly find it incredulous to think that someone (ie: the Dad) who had quite clearly got over-eating issues, should think he had the right to laugh at someone who, 2/3 years ago, was fighting for their life! I wonder if him and his daughter would feel the same if he, in the future, has to face a similar life changing tragedy, which affects more than just the diagnosed person. After all, it was quite apparent that Dad had eaten more than his fair share of pies, pasties, rolls and donuts and this as we know can lead to all manner of medical problems, not to mention the fact that he was hardly in a position to laugh at my appearance when he was hardly a candidate for the Chippendales!! Thank you for reading this.
