So, its Saturday night in Pullman, and while most of the town is up at the coliseum enjoying Jerry Seinfeld LIVE, I am at home with my mom and were trying to agree on an on-demand video to watch. Were debating the pros and cons of a documentary on, of all people, Donald Rusmsfeld. (Go figure) Mom notices that its $8.99!!! to rent! I say, Ha, they should be paying US to watch that! The next movie I click on is called Ghosts in the Machine, and before I read the summary I had NO IDEA what it was about. Its about a photographer who takes pictures of animals..ah-HA! I think, heres a strong possibility! We watch the trailer, and I am completely sold. So I say to my mom, Well, I will have to watch this one for sure. But I can do that later by myself if you dont want to watch it. To my surprise and delight, she says shes fine with watching it now. And so, we did. Heres the interesting part. Remember when Blackfish was on CNN a couple of months back and I was posting about it left and right? Some of you will no doubt recall my raving about Forks Over Knives and Earthlings. I make it my job to try to keep on top of these things. But, I had no recollection of even hearing of Ghosts in the Machine! None. And it flippin ROCKED! Yes, there are some images that are hard to look at, but, its not terribly graphic. It did NOT make me cry. I wanted to stand up and cheer on multiple occasions. Earthlings had me balling like a baby in the first half hour--when those two guys in India casually tossed a stray dog into the back of a garbage truck--OMG!!! The moral of this story? Finally, this crazy world we live in, has evolved to the point where professionally crafted documentaries on human responsibility toward, and stewardship of animals can be made and aired and be fantastic, withOUT little ol me even knowing one darn thing about them ahead of time! I never thought I would see this day. To the people who produced, directed, starred in, wrote and backed Ghosts in the Machine, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart! Every single ghost in that movie who had to be left behind thanks you, too!
