So, let me see if Ive got this straight. Russia takes Crimea from Ukraine by force. We respond by offering $1 billion to Ukraine, which is (almost totally) reliant on Russia for natural gas, Ukraines primary source of energy. Which means that our $1 billion will eventually end up in Russias wallet. Ergo, were financing Russias conquest of Crimea, our own humiliation and the deterioration of our credibility, and the subjugation of a would-be ally. Given the ineptitude of our foreign policy political appointees, I guess that we should be happy that Putin is only charging us a billion dollars to eat our lunch--and promote the murder of peaceful protesters in Kiev, of course. I cant wait until the media begin to twist all of this into some sort of victory for the President. Im not stupid enough to figure out how the media will manage to twist this into a victory for President Obama, but rest assured that theyll find a way. As for the republicans, there should be no doubt that theyll snatch defeat from the jaws of political victory vis-a-vis the president. What will they do to screw up this political advantage? Im guessing that, sensing the Presidents lost stature, the republicans will pounce and offer a bill in the House designed to cut funding for school lunch programs for poor kids in order to finance tax cuts for people who hate gays. I swear I sometimes feel like Im about to wake up and that Ill have to explain this crazy dream (but it seems so real) to someone. Yeah, in my dream, all of our political leaders and the media were trying to out-moron each other. And the Russian president, he rode around on horseback, shirtless, and demanded that we give him a billion bucks to take over one of our allies, AND WE DID IT! AND THEN WE PROCLAIMED VICTORY! And then I wrote about my thoughts on the issue on this thing called Facebook in case two or three of my Facebook friends might actually read it and realize how witty and urbane I am. But nobody liked what I had to say, and all my scribbling was for naught. And now Im depressed. Thanks a lot, Obama.
