So my mom has been going on and on about the homeless man that sleeps at the park close to my house since I arrived. I keep telling her to let it go and for some reason she thinks she has the power to change his life. Yesterday we had a nice small family cook-out in my yard. I watched my mother prepare the loveliest meal and before she sat down and ate with us, she got up and stood by the wall that separates my house from the park and started frantically waving at this stranger homeless man. He waved back and my mom called him over. I thought shed absolutely lost her mind inviting a man she barely knew over to our house. I watched her converse with this man on such a deep human level and ask if she could give him some food. The man stood there, and started crying. He was very grateful--someone had seen HIM. And thats when I remembered: all of us, ALL of us just want one thing: to be seen. I told her later that I really admired watching her do that and praised her good heart. She just looked at me and matter-of-factly just said Motho ke Motho ka batho translates to I am because we are, basically dismissing my praise because its what is expected of her as a human being witnessing another human beings struggle. It dawned on me that thats the culture I come from, a culture where not only blood makes family, but the very breathe of life in all. Im so grateful to have come from such a fearless, compassionate woman with such a massive heart. I am grateful to be a child of Afrika with all her principles! xNamaste #AfricanWomen #Ubuntu #humanness
