So, the National Cultural Foundation comes back to us again this year with the same gaudy dialect ads to promote its Crop Over events. There’s one for the opening gala that always make me reach for my mute button. When will we grow up as a people and stop making comical caricatures of the way we speak. Why does the NCF believe they can only reach us if they use loud, grotesque speech. The vast majority of us who speak dialect never speak like that, and we certainly don’t go around laughing when we hear each other speak. The time has long past when we should have put behind us all of the loud-mouthed Lick Mout Lous and Market Vendors and accept that our manner of speech is not something about which we should be amused. People don’t go around laughing at the way they speak – unless they are comparing it with some other language they consider superior.
