So this is a copy and paste, some people need to read the comments re hollow point ammo - Attorney Martin Hood’s Response to News24 Article: “Pistorius’s Ammo designed for ‘maximum damage’” (11.03.2014) 1. There are a number of unfortunately inaccurate statements in the AFP Article that deals with the ammunition used by Oscar Pistorius when he shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp. 2. These inaccuracies by so called experts have created a completely erroneous perception of the ammunition that Oscar Pistorius used. 3. Hollow point or expanding ammunition is prohibited for Military use by the Hague Convention. Hollow point or expanding ammunition is used primarily by law enforcement agencies and for civilian self defence purposes. 4. The Black Talon was originally developed by Winchester in America. It is a bullet that was designed to expand with jagged edges hence the name “Talon” coupled with the word “Black” because it was coated with a proprietary substance known as Lubalox. A simple Google search would have revealed these facts. 5. Because of concerns raised by medical professionals that the sharp edges of the Talon could tear surgical gloves and thus increase the risk of HIV transmission, the product was restricted to law enforcement use only. 6. Winchester replaced this ammunition with its Ranger SXT range of ammunition which is similar in design but does not have the same sharp edges created by expansion. 7. Dum dum bullets on the other hand originated from the British Controlled Arsenal located in India near Calcutta of the same name. The bullet, an exposed nose bullet was developed by Captain Neville Bertie Clay. This bullet and its effects is one of the reasons why the Hague Convention banned the use of soft point bullets for Military use. 8. The article refers to ammunition being first manufactured by Winchester which is incorrect. It has only been manufactured by Winchester and only became available in South African shortly before 1994. 9. This and all other types of expanding ammunition are legal in South Africa and have never been banned or restricted in any way. 10. If a licenced firearm owner paid R2 000.00 for a box of Black Talon’s in the 1990’s they would have been paying more than the cost of a top quality rifle, which is extremely unlikely. 11. The purpose of a soft point or an expanding bullet is to reduce over penetration and to avoid the bullet exiting the target and to avoid injuring innocent bystanders. 12. All of the information in this note is freely available on the Internet and basic research should have been done to check the opinions of so called “experts” so as not to create (whether inadvertently or deliberately) the incorrect impression that this type of ammunition is both illegal and possessing of some magical characteristics that other types of ammunition do not have.
