So, today, my family went to this restaurant, Bulls in Long Beach, MS. The food was not exactly as we expected, however, the ambience was great! We enjoyed the conversation and just being with my grandparents was a joy by itself. To our surprise, we received the tickets and they had such a high gratuity amount for just 6 of us. I politely voiced my concerns. The waitress was very polite and she removed the gratuity. We, in turn, gave a substantial tip as we always do. As we exited, I said to the hostess, have a good evening. Her reply was, (sarcastically)...we will now! Then she walked off. With integrity, I spoke to the manager and shared my familys disgust. Do we really live in a society that yet turn their nose up to people of color? Did they think that because were black, we dont give substantial tips? At the age of 14, I sat on a panel to discuss education and the African American youth. In my innocence, I suggested that we should stop focusing on what the white man is doing to us! The movement was back in the 60s! We dont have to worry about racism anymore! But then a very wise woman who served as state representative told me, BABY, RACISM STILL EXIST! You just keep on living. Today, I must say that Former Rep. Francis Fredericks was right! For those who yet live in the shadows of Emmitt Till, Trayvon Martin, Shawn Bell, and Michael Brown, keep on living...A CHANGE IS GONNA COME!
