So tomorrow we are heading back to Houston TX and another week of Proton Therapy. Carin has 30 treatments in all so we will be done with that at the end of September at which time her Doctor will decide if Chemotherapy is also necessary. She doesnt have to be in Houston for Chemotherapy from what I understand because it is an oral version of Chemo and she would just swallow a pill. I am not sure if Blue Cross and Blue Shield is going to pay for that or not. Maybe its experimental as well? I will say one thing this treatment is pretty amazing so far. I have a bit of history in my family with brain cancer and watched my beloved cousin Linda get consumed by the stuff quite some time ago before they know what they know now about treatment. I remember how she changed from one surgery to the next and how her mood went lower and lower with the chemo and radiation. She left this earth much too early and in the years since her absence it has had a profound affect on my family. I often think of her as Carin and I walk this same path together and I think would she still be here if they had Proton Therapy back then, but then I realize it was around back then. Its been around 50 years! and if only she had access to it maybe it could have helped. I think it would have from what I have seen and I can not understand why insurance wants to fight paying for this treatment. Now on to another subject, Carins future as a teacher. You know she really enjoys teaching and the students she helps, she has a Masters degree in French and an ad on certification in English as a second language. This has been her career and from what I can tell by most of the outpouring from former teachers that worked along side of her and from her students, she has made a significant impact as a Teacher. Now she is faced with the reality that her employer Jefferson Parish Schools has no way to compensate her while she is on sick leave from work. She used her sabbatical and extended sick days for her two brain surgeries so there is nothing left. They are taking that they want to help but they can not make an exception for Carin because it would open the flood gates for other teachers to abuse the medical leave system they have in place. So now she is really praying over her next move and whether or not she should allow this situation to force her into medical disability. We could always wait it out I guess if she really wants to remain a teacher but while she is waiting and being treated, there will be no pay for her. That takes her income away at a time when we have actually doubled out debt by taking out loans to pay for this Proton Therapy so the timing couldnt be worse really but at the same time I believe God would not force our family into ruin and bad credit because of this unfortunate situation in which Blue Cross and their denials has put us in. Next topic, we do have legal representation now and have met with an attorney who will go through with proceedings against Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. We are looking forward to seeing progress there but realize at the same time legal matters can often times be a drawn out process. Final update topic- We now have an efficiency apartment located near the Proton Center at MD Anderson. It is really a nice place with a full kitchen so we will not have to keep eating out all the time. thats a bigger deal than you may realize. Also this place is near Herman park so there is places to go exercise and hang out and have some fun in between treatments. Thanks to everyone for your continued Prayers, words of encouragement, financial support and most of all your friendship. Knowing you are not fighting alone is a huge comfort to us. Remember we are ramping up for that big fund raising benefit on August 30th at the Howlin Wolf New Orleans- ProtonBlast
