So whilst having a mistress on the side, abusing her physically and mentally, lying to your family and friends, leaving her with no support and possibly even abandoning your child before it is even born is normalised and sometimes recommended; taking another wife at the agreement of all parties, ensuring you deal justly with both women/families and that the husband fulfils all his responsibilities whether financial or emotional is labelled barbaric? We must question who sets these boundaries and supposed red lines in place. Are these universal truths? Why is it that we now see them as such? Ultimately if we accept the sovereignty of Allah (swt) as indicated in our shahadah, then even if we may not prefer to be involved in a polygamous marriage personally, we must accept that Allah (swt) permitted it for those who can carry it out correctly and according to Islam.
