So yesterday, the Western Black Rhino was officially declared - TopicsExpress

So yesterday, the Western Black Rhino was officially declared extinct...a sad day certainly, however it must be noted that extinction is occurring at a rate unprecedented in history, and we should be concerned about the date of other species rather than just flagship animals such as the rhino or panda. Did you know the Christmas Island Pipistrelle, a small vespar bat was last seen in 2009, and may be the first vertebrate species to go extinct in 60 years? Didnt see that in the media. Did you know there is a eucalypt, the Silver-leaf Candlebark, which is found on Mt Canobolas, and nowhere else in the world? I have just completed a small research project on the species, and it is under serious threat from climate change...it has nowhere else to go. Who knows what valuable pharmaceuticals, possible cures and environmental benefits we could lose with these species. So I ask, even for today, to lament the lack of foresight us humans are showing for the next generation, and the planet as a whole. Think about what you eat, the products you use and how humans would be able to live the life we do now following the mass extinction event that will occur over the next few hundred years.
