Soap Box: Regardless of your opinion of the tipping system, it is NEVER okay to NOT TIP based on principle. Not leaving a tip for your server because you think the restaurant should pay us a fair wage is NOT advocacy and is NOT acting in solidarity. In fact, it hurts the servers ability to pay bills in more ways than you realize. 1. You didnt pay for your service. 2. You deprive the server of other paying guests because you are occupying one of his/her tables. 3. You actually COST the server money, as s/he still has to tip food runners, bartenders, and bussers regardless of how much you leave. Not to mention its patronizing, demoralizing, and offensive. You want to protest the system? Stop going out to eat. Write to congress. Start a petition. Dont hurt the only people you are (allegedly) trying to help. :::step down from soapbox:::
