The USSR collapsed because over a period of time, the ideology which united the communists and enabled them to understand political and economic truths was no longer considered important. When the ruling communists put distance between themselves and their original ideology of Marxism-Leninism, their practical outlook also began to waver. And one after the other, they rolled back the socialist planned economy, culminating in Mikhail Gorbachev’s Glasnost and Perestroika which began a process of dismantling socialism. The end result was that socialism was voluntarily disbanded from above, and thus began Russia’s descent into economic and political chaos. This historic example underscores the necessity of ideological commitment as necessary to socialism’s success.
