Some calls are tougher than others; this is one of those times. We missed deadline by a couple of hours with the July 4 issue of the Kyiv Post, mainly because I agonized over choice of front-page photos. The majority of the staff wanted to go with the picture of a man covering a civilian killed on July 2 with a blanket. A minority wanted to go with the elderly womans agonized emotioins as she stood in front of a bombed-out house on fire. Ultimately, I went with elderly woman on the strength of the emotions in the image. (Both were Agence-France Presse photos, by the way.) There was nothing gruesome or graphic in the dead body photo; it was a stark, poignant depiction of the reality in Ukraines east, where hundreds have been killed since April. Right call, wrong call - you decide. Both photos are in the newspaper.
