Some more good points from local architect Delon Price: Good work. This is gold but for marshalling greater public support for the no underground car-park cause, I am getting the feeling that it is going to be hard to rely on the heritage angle to appeal to the average punter. Those of us who have either grown up here, have a true love for the area or just instinctively get what the Bondi urban character is about (regardless of whether they are locals or not), are the easy sell. At the end of the day I think the most effective campaign against this car-park is going to have to lead with the hard edged facts, ie. the substantial financial and practical shortcomings in the scheme. How ever much council thinks this thing is going to cost to build, I guarantee you can double that figure in reality. Then probably add another 50% for good measure. In addition to building cost, and ongoing maintenance cost, the environmental and health issues like vehicle exhaust extraction, energy consumption etc. I think that the security and surveillance issues are one of the strongest considerations for any debate on the topic. Enclosed car parks are notorious for attracting crime as they are hard to secure and surveil. Has anybody asked the local cops how feel about the prospect of having to respond to crime in this structure. Descending into a confined space with limited visibility and access/egress to confront potentially drunk and violent groups is a real possibility for them. These shenanigans already happen regularly above ground. Maybe we should approach the Bondi Precinct for an opinion, from a law and order perspective. Also, Is Waverley council budgeting in their spreadsheet for ongoing 24 hour private security patrols for this structure? I wonder what that is going to set rate-payers back every year. Current car park needs no such measures or expense.
