Some of my best memories come from times when I made a fool of myself! In my family, the blunders and gigantic busts we went through in life usually ended up becoming the (often greatly exaggerated) stories we told about ourselves and one another whenever we all gathered together. It was a ritual of sharing, I suppose, that we all enjoyed immensely. It was also a way of catching up with each other, of staying connected ... and of reminding one another that such stumbling moments are a natural part of life that we all go through. A good sense of humor was cultivated in our family - and especially the ability to laugh at oneself - which I find serves well towards helping us to face our blunders and to develop an attitude of humility. We might think of the times we blow it as a sort of built-in mechanism designed to go off on occasion as a barrier against hubris, and false pride. After all, if we NEVER made a mistake, who could stand to be around us, right? ;)
