Some topics for research that came to my mind recently: 1. While thinking of Soul Mountain, I felt someone can do research on the primitive loneliness depicted by various writers. Protagonists leaving civilization and wandering; loneliness of the / within the crowd... [There is a book by David Reisman et.al. called The Lonely Crowd]... the different kinds of loneliness; its reasons and consequences... The philosophy behind it... This is a huge topic, too big for one research. So, you have to limit it to a few authors and texts. In some authors, all novels will depict loneliness of different kinds. Paulo Coelho.... Existential writers.... Diasporic writers... You could write some paper also on this topic. 2. Again, Soul Mountain set me thinking about the prospects of humour in the context of political regimes. How writers respond to tyranny and political oppression through humour. Milan Kunderas The Joke is the classic example, of course. And Orwells Animal Farm would be the mosr familiar example. Black humour is certainly employed in such novels. What other kinds of humour are there? What are its implications? This post is dedicated to Rachana Srivastava :D
