Some thoughts on the season of Lent. Lent is usually a time in the Church’s year when Christians take on a particular discipline, spiritual reading, meditation, self examination, fasting, self denial and prayer Lent has its roots in the preparation undertaken by baptismal candidates in the early church. The season of Lent begins today with Ash Wednesday, when we kneel to receive the ash of last year’s burned palms. The ash a smudge on our foreheads a sign of our intension to engage in work, in the weeks ahead. Like soldiers into battle wearing the sign of the cross to help us in our struggle. In this season of lent we have the chance again to look at our lives as in a mirror, to measure our lives and to see if correction is needed. Some may find it helpful to step away from pleasure or pastime; others take on some added time or task. No matter how we keep Lent, it’s a time to take stock of who we are. As with many religious observances, there is no real basis for Lent found in the Bible. Lent is a church institution. However, the idea has a sound spiritual basis. Moses, Elijah, and Jesus himself set a precedent for it. Each observed a forty-day period of prayer and fasting as a preparation for spiritual work. It should be noted that the number forty is frequently used in the Scriptures to indicate a completed preparation for something to follow. Lent can be a true season of preparation for Easter. The very word, “Lent,” is derived from a word meaning “springtime.” So, during Lent we can experience springtime in our soul – the budding of new ideas and the unfolding of new awareness. Lent is a time to grow in awareness and appreciation of just what it means to be child of God. LENT is a time for stripping down, a time for meekness and simplicity of heart. LENT is also a special time and precious opportunity for growth in our Lord Jesus Christ. USE THIS LENT FOR PERSONAL RENEWAL. Blessings Joshua
