Somebody just came into another thread of mine to rant on the racism of my rather strong criticism of Islam. However, people who know me, and dont just drop in to take pot shots, know that Ive actually argued _against_ blanket sanctions against individual Muslims. (One example arguing _against_ forbidding Muslims from serving in the military.) I do that precisely _because_ I separate the individual from the ideology he or she might be caught up in. Just because a religion says something doesnt mean that everyone who follows that religion in general agrees with it. How many of my Jewish friends go out to kill Wiccans? (Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. For that matter, I dont see any reason for that not to be a Christian commandment still (and, in the past, was fully accepted as such) but there have been few stonings or stake burnings directed Laurie Cabots way. Self-proclaimed witches are able to practice their religion quite openly in the US despite 77% of the population professing some form of Christianity. And so, whatever I might think of Islam, I take the individual as the individual and judge them on their _own_ merits. So long as they are willing to keep certain doctrines--jihad, killing pagans and atheists, Sharia, killing people who decide to leave Islam--theoretical, Im willing to get along and mind my own business. There is the individual and there is the ideology. The two influence each other, sometimes greatly, sometimes less so. But they are not the same. And I try to keep each to its own sphere.
