Song #27: Ive Been To Canada Once, Flat On Everyside (2004). I dont remember when or why I wrote this. I did drive from Bloomington, Indiana, to Toronto in early 2001. Besides me, there was another American, plus an Irish and Japanese national. All four of us students. The border guy was friendly and chatted us up, barely glancing only at Kaorus passport before waving us through into Windsor, Ontario. This is in stark contrast to my most recent visit, driving from Washington state to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2011. There, almost ten years after a bunch of assholes hijacked passenger planes and flew them into skyscrapers in New York and a remote file in Pennsylvania, the Canadian border guards were paranoid and dickish. They searched my car and confiscated my phone briefly. I encountered a similar attitude with the US guards coming back, minus the shake-down. This song, incidentally, was written in a time of a casual US-Canandian border. Too bad how things have changed along the imaginary line dividing two countries with so much in common. I did have a pleasant lunch in Windsor, too. We played pool and had a couple Labatt Blues.
