PETALING JAYA: Moderate values are simply values that are good for the nation, said Datuk Dr Abdullah Abdul Rahman, vice-president of the Administrative and Diplomatic Officers’ Alumni Association (PTD Alumni). Speaking to reporters at the pre-event launch of the PTD Alumni International Conference 2014 here yesterday, Dr Abdullah said civil servants were duty bound to give politicians truthful advice, pleasant or otherwise, for the sake of the nation. “Being moderate is just doing what’s good for the nation,” he said. This was echoed by former Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Sallehuddin Mohamed, who described civil service as those working behind the scenes while practising good values of honesty. “We are moderate in that sense. We are the backroom boys committed to honesty,” he said yesterday. The two-day conference, which begins today at Hotel Istana, features speakers such as Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs chief executive Wan Saiful Wan Jan, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and World Bank senior governance specialist Soren Davidson. The sessions will be moderated by Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, chairman of the Asli Centre for Public Policy Studies, as well as Datuk Noriyah Ahmad, formerly director-general of the economic planning unit under the Prime Minister’s Department. Ramon is also a columnist who is part of The Star’s Moderate Malaysia campaign. “The conference will discuss change and nation-building – specifically the pillars of the 1Malaysia concept, which are national unity and moving towards a high-income nation,” said Dr Abdullah. Over 350 participants from both the private and public sector are expected to attend the conference. It is sponsored by Petronas, FGV Holdings, Genting Malaysia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
