Special Award Winners Announced for the 37th Annual Yarmouth County Athletic Awards Banquet: -Official of the Year (co-winners); Al Mohle and Eric Burns Al and Eric are curling officials and work great as a team. They are always on duty at provincial bonspeils for various levels such as Junior, Men’s, Mixed and Special Olympics. Al has also assisted at National Seniors held in Digby and has travelled around to other clubs in the province. Al and Eric’s training and attitude have contributed greatly to them being top officials in the area for curling. -Athlete of the Year: Mackenzie Munroe, Track & Field: Mackenzie is an elite track & field sprinter. He is Captain of the St. FX University track team and won 3 Gold medals at the 2013 AUS Track & Field Championships. He also won a Bronze medal at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Quebec as a member of the 4 X 400m Nova Scotia team. -Youth Athlete of the Year: Hudson Grimshaw-Surette, Track & Field: Hudson has won the NSAAF Junior Cross Country Provincial title 2 years in a row and has numerous first place wins in various distances. He has won at both Provincial and Atlantic competitions. In August 2013 he competed at the Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships in Langley BC. He had personal bests in 3 events and placed 7th in the 800m & 1200m. -Fair Play Award Winner: Simon Surette, Coach, Jeux de l’Acadie and ESPB: Simon has coached basketball, soccer and volleyball teams with les Jeux de lAcadie and at Ecole Secondaire de Par en Bas. He is a well liked and respected coach. Most recently, Simon coached the Boy’s Volleyball team for the Jeux de l’Acadie regional games and placed 1st which brought his team to “La Finale des Jeux de l’Acadie” which was held in Richibucto et St.-Louis-de-Kent. -Coach of the Year: Laurie Barron, Yarmouth Mariners Junior A Hockey Team: Laurie is and has been a very talented coach in Yarmouth for many years, coaching the Yarmouth Mariners Junior A hockey team. Laurie has won the Maritime Hockey League’s Coach of the Year and was an Assistant Coach with Team Canada East during the World Junior A Championships in 2012. Most recently, Laurie has been selected as an Assistant Coach of Team East for the 2013 CJHL Prospects Game during the World Junior A Challenge here in Yarmouth, November 8/9th. -Sport Volunteer of the Year; Paul MacDonald: Paul has been involved for many years in Minor Hockey and Minor Baseball, coaching various teams. This past summer, his Mosquito AA baseball team won the Atlantic Championships, hosted here in Yarmouth. He was also co-chair for a very successful Chicks with Sticks tournament and was on the committee for the World Junior A Challenge. Paul was also Co- Chair of the hugely successful National Play On 4 on 4 Street Hockey Tournament held here in Yarmouth in September. The Banquet will be held on November 15th, 2013, at ESPB & Centre Communautaire de Par-en-Bas, Salle Père Maurice LeBlanc, in Tusket, 630pm-900pm. *Congratulations to our special award winners, individuals, and teams that have won at Provincial Competition or higher! You have represented Yarmouth County well!
