Spinal thought 117. Articulations of the spine. In the neck - TopicsExpress

Spinal thought 117. Articulations of the spine. In the neck (cervical) area of the spine there is free flexion, lateral flexion and rotation (combined) and some degree of extension. Pulling the head back and slumping the neck forward will restrict the freedom of the neck and make it harder to turn the head and neck, for example to look over the shoulder when parking your car. In the chest (thoracic) area there is limited flexion/extension, but free rotation with lateral flexion somewhat limited by the ribs. Again a slumped or stiff back and spine will severely limit the freedom of the chest to turn and bend sideways which in turn will restrict the freedom of breathing. In the lumbar area rotation is very limited, but flexion, extension is free with lateral flexion less free. Pulling down and slumping through the lumbar curve or pulling the back in and over arching the lumbar curve will restrict movement and the ability of the lumbar spine to support us upwardly, keeping the distance between the pelvis and the ribcage. Not very nice for the internal organs.
